Our AGM event, 'Comprehensive Education : Winning the Support of Parents'

Our AGM event will take place on November 27th at 6.45 pm at Hamilton House (NEU Headquarters), Mabledon Place, Kings Cross, London WC1H 9BD (Please note this is a change of venue.) The theme will be, ‘Comprehensive Education : Winning the Support of Parents.’ As a General Election approaches our panel will discuss school choice, misunderstandings about comprehensive education, and why politicians continue to expand selective education. Our speakers are:

Madeleine Holt
Madeleine Holt organises Meet the Parents, a pioneering scheme to give primary school parents the inside story on their local secondary schools. Meet the Parents arranges for families from local comprehensive schools to visit feeder primaries and talk frankly about their secondary school experience. She is also co-founder of Rescue Our Schools, a parent- led campaign group for properly funded, imaginative and locally accountable state education and helped set up the alliance for alternatives to SATS, More than a Score. She was formerly culture correspondent on BBC Newsnight and has gone back to making films about innovative state schools for both More than a Score and the Edge Foundation.

Alexa Collins
Alexa Collins is the Labour Party Parliamentary Candidate for Beaconsfield, and a Buckinghamshire parent active in campaigning to end the selective system. She is Secretary of Beaconsfield CLP and Chair of Bucks Labour Forum. She has spoken on ending selection at the last two Labour conferences.

Harry Kutty

Harry Kutty is the Headteacher of Cantell School in Southampton. He has been a Headteacher for three years having previously been Associate Headteacher, at the same school. Harry is a trained OFSTED Inspector and has been inspecting in the South East since 2014. Two years ago, Cantell School helped to form and became part of an innovative Co-operative Trust; The Aspire Community Trust, of which Harry is the Chair. In Leading a PFI Secondary School, Harry retains a key interest in School Finance and is the Vice Chair of Southampton School`s Forum.

Professor Simon Burgess

Simon Burgess is a Professor of Economics at the University of Bristol. His research interests are in the economics of education with particular interests in teacher effectiveness; pupil motivation; school accountability; choice and competition, school admissions and unequal access to high-performing schools. He also works on the educational performance of minority students and ethnic segregation in schools.
